Who are the faces behind Sá Nogueira Ceramics? Meet the master artisans keeping the Portuguese tile tradition alive.
Joseph Sá Nogueira
Born in São Pedro de Penaferrim, Sintra. His childhood was marked by games that led to the discovery of how wind-up cars worked, which he would dismantle and reassemble through long days of learning and revelation.
In the workshop, they are responsible for the alchemy work in the development of ceramic glazes, high-fire pastes, or ceramic molds.
Since 2012, Atelier Sá Nogueira's work has been done together. Personal life intersects with professional life, and the workshop is invaded by an explosion of color and creativity born from his wife's participation in the workshop's artistic work.
The workshop's work represents an evolutionary historical line, from the tile production techniques of the 16th century to the symbolic element of the tile today. Between tradition and innovation, the tile, so characteristic of Portuguese history and identity, confers uniqueness as a cladding product, elevated to the exponent of singular art in the four corners of the world.
Amelia Sá Nogueira
Born into a family with a strong female presence, she grows up fascinated by the rhythmic pace of manual work in lace, embroidery, and tapestries that magically emerge from her mother's and grandmother's hands.
At the studio, you collaborate on the various stages of the ceramic process related to tile making, and later, you develop your own collections working with different techniques and clays ranging from red earthenware, stoneware, to faience.
Argues that dissemination, appreciation, and knowledge are fundamental elements in ceramic work. In this sense, it develops a historical research project on 16th-century tiles, a project that will enrich the symbolic value, memory, and identity of the tiles created in the workshop.
Combines the work developed in the workshop with the promotion of ceramics to different audiences, whether through work with schools, training courses, or cultural projects aimed at wider audiences.
